Marshall Wilson, Stuck In A Sea Of Foam (LANDSCAPE & ENVIRONMENT 2024)

This photo is part of a larger series titled "Dawn to Dusk," which explores Australia's relationship with water through the lens of surfing. With nearly 90% of the population living along the coast, water has profoundly shaped Australia's history and culture. Surfing has become an integral part of the country's identity. This image was taken at the famous surf spot, Winkipop –known for its explosive and aggressive waves that attract surfers from around the globe. I remember standing on the shoreline with my boots and tripod soaked, as cold, winter gales hit my side. I was pushing my mere 200m telephoto lens to its limits to capture these tenacious surfers. Some days I would arrive right after sunrise and stay till sunset, enduring the elements as long as they did, and watching their dance till the last player carried their board home. (Fun Fact: captured on this exact day last year- Sept. 9, 2023)
