Natalia Mroz, Orphan (PEOPLE & PORTRAIT 2024)

A new born orphaned zebra requires round the clock care in its early days. The touch of carer Letipo Legison brings the foal comfort, and substitutes for the touch of its mother. Found days earlier by scouts from Grevy’s Zebra Trust, this foal is a Grevy’s Zebra, a highly endangered species endemic to Northern Kenya with only approximately 3000 left in the wild. The commitment required of Letipo is vast - due to the threat from local leopards, he also sleeps in the same room as the zebra, ensuring 24 hour care. He gives the foal regular bottle feeds of a special milk formula to gain strength and weight. Eventually, the foal will be introduced to the horses stabled at Sarara Lodge, with the aim of releasing it into the wild.
