Jane Davies, Ladki of Lotwara (PEOPLE & PORTRAIT 2025)
Upon my arrival at the rural village of Lotwara, I felt the tension my body had carried while exploring city areas melt away. “I like it here” I exclaimed. “This is the real India” my friend Harshita replied, before introducing me to some of the local women. The female experience has a way of connecting women. Even in the face of language and cultural barriers. The implied safety of each other’s company can effortlessly cross such gulfs. I left a piece of myself in that place and in their presence. I was satisfied to move on from most of my Indian adventures. But I long for more time with the ladkiyan of Lotwara.
