Simon Harsent, Evidence of Marks and Time #2 (LANDSCAPE & ENVIRONMENT 2025)
A recent walk in the Blue Mountains led me to a rock face covered in carved love declarations—messages etched into nature. It brought to mind an earlier project, The Tears of Hinehukatere, photographed in New Zealand’s South Island. The Māori story behind it speaks of love and loss, set against the backdrop of a glacier. I was struck by how the cracks in the ice echoed the carved marks in stone. That visual link, emotional and physical marks left on the land, led me to start pairing the two.
