Neale Stratford, David v Goliath (ART & CONCEPTUAL 2026)

My photograph David v Goliath (2026) stages a playful confrontation between art history and contemporary conceptual art, drawing on David by Michelangelo and Comedian by Maurizio Cattelan. I isolate a fragment of a classical David sculpture and tape a miniature plastic banana across it, echoing Cattelan’s provocation. The work reverses the biblical dynamic of David and Goliath: the authority of Renaissance sculpture becomes the “Goliath”, while the fragile banana plays the disruptive “David”. Humour and irreverence challenge the reverence surrounding canonical art. By photographing this encounter, I suspend a fleeting absurdity, reflecting on how small gestures can destabilise even the most monumental artistic traditions.
